The Answer
(to the tune of “The Streets of Laredo”)
Why make children fight for what needs no defending?
Why make bitter enemies, losing good friends?
As our president sends all the children he’s sending,
Our parents may lose kids our president sends.
From battles we fight in Vietnamese jungles
To battles we fight in the desert’s hot sand,
We keep fighting battles and seeing kids dying.
Keep sending our guns where we could lend a hand.
Though our president tells us we’re great liberators,
He’s making the people feel less and less free.
When friends who are loyal and welcome our people
Become more like enemies, where will we be?
Democracy means rule by all of the people,
But is this a land where the people prevail?
We all are the people, not just those with money.
And not just straight Protestant whites who are male!
Bob Dylan once asked the world how many years.
Many years have gone by since he gave us that song,
But that question he asked us still rings in our ears.
We yelled “NOW!” way back then. We have waited too long!
The answer should not just be blowing up high.
If it blows in the wind it may never be found.
The answer is not in the wind Bob referred to.
The answer is right here with us on the ground.
The answer is not at the top of some mountain.
We don’t have to hear of some deity’s will.
If there is an answer, we all have the answer:
The answer is simply refusing to kill.
